This portion of the course will discuss the benefits of introducing young patients into your practice early; provide the learner with tips to have the best possible outcomes when working with young children and address the role of ultra-processed foods on pediatric health and early childhood caries.
Practical Considerations of Local Anesthesia presented by Craig McKenzie, DMD, MSED, an Assistant Professor of dental anesthesiology and the director of the Center for Patients with Special Needs at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. The goal of this lecture is to provide clinicians with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver local anesthesia safely and effectively. Common techniques for maxillary and mandibular techniques will be reviewed with focus on troubleshooting failure of anesthesia. Modifications to dosing for pediatric patients and medically complex patients will also be discussed
Attendees can expect to learn more about:
- Communicating the importance of early dental care to parents or guardians.
- The risk factors for early childhood caries.
- Behavior management techniques to gain patient cooperation.
- The benefits and limitations of vasoconstrictors.
- Complications and reasons for anesthetic failure.
- Anatomy of the trigeminal nerve and oral cavity as it relates to common maxillary and mandibular techniques.
