Oral Cancer Screening and Management Strategies

Education Methods: lecture, slides and discussion.

The lecture will review common oral mucosal diseases including oral cancer and review risk factors for oral cancer and oral potentially malignant disease, as well as complexities in the detection methods for diagnosis of oral potentially malignant disease and review current surgical and non-surgical treatment strategies. This course also will provide guidance on the pre-cancer treatment plan including the dental evaluation prior to anticipated cancer treatment and describe the dental management of oral cancer patients including long-term follow-up as well as oral complications of head and neck cancer therapy. 
Attendees can expect to learn more about:
- Evaluating the oral cavity to diagnose common oral mucosal disease including oral cancer and oral potentially malignant disease.
- The risk factors and epidemiology for oral cancer/oral potentially malignant disease.
- The current rise of HPV and its impact on the prognosis and managment of oropharyngeal cancer.
- Surgical and non-surgical treatment strategies of oral cancer/oral potentially malignant disease.
- Management and long-term follow up of the oral cancer patient and oral complications of cancer therapy.

Presented by: Thomas P. Sollecito, DMD, FDS, RCSEd, Chair of the Department of Oral Medicine and Professor of Oral Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and Chief of the Oral Medicine Division at the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Dr. Thomas P. Sollecito has received a research grant from National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. All of the relevant financial relationships listed have been mitigated.
